Advanced Airbrush Certification · St. Petersburg, FL

$850. One-on-one. Six chapters.

The Advanced Airbrush Spray Tanning Certification at The Bronze Lily Training Academy is a 1-on-1, full-day professional course taught personally by founder Larae Leeson — a Licensed Florida Facial Specialist with 14+ years of spray tan craft. The curriculum is built from her own 81-page training manual and covers six chapters: skin science and contraindications, equipment and airbrush mechanics, product and ingredient knowledge, the full session flow (consent, consultation, shade selection, blending, prep, aftercare), step-by-step application with client positioning, and the business of professional sunless tanning. The course costs $850. No kit, no formula, no products are bundled — students receive direct supplier links and a wholesale supply checklist, so you build your supply line with no upcharge from us. No license is required: spray tanning is unlicensed in Florida, which makes this the lowest-friction professional credential in the academy.

The strategic frame

Why this is the first certification I recommend.

If you're building a beauty business, spray tan is the smartest place to start. Here's the math:

  • No license required.

Spray tanning is unlicensed in Florida. You can be earning by your first weekend.

  • Low equipment cost.

A solid airbrush gun, a tent, an extraction unit — plus your first round of solution and supplies, all in right at or under $1,000 to set up. We tell you exactly what to buy and where.

  • Strong margin.

$45 to $63 per service. Twenty minutes of work per appointment. Do the math against any other entry-level service.

  • Mobile-friendly.

Drive to clients' homes, hotels, Airbnbs. I started mobile — a single machine in my car as a college freshman. The mobile model still works today.

  • Built-in upsell pipeline.

Every client who books a tan is now a candidate for everything else you offer. Lashes. Brows. Facials. Head spa.

  • Bidirectional.

Works the other way too: a client who already trusts you for lashes or facials will easily add spray tan as a complementary service. Spray tan builds books from both directions — entry point AND ticket-builder.

This certification isn't just how to spray tan. It's how to build a business with spray tan as the front door.

The numbers

What spray tan can actually earn you.

Based on a $55 average service (the midpoint of our $45–$63 range), a 5-day workweek, and 20 working days a month. Solution cost per tan runs about $3–$5.

3 tans / day

$3,300 / mo

$39,600 / year

Part-time. Roughly an hour a day of actual work.

6 tans / day

$6,600 / mo

$79,200 / year

A real beauty business. Two hours of work, four hours of life.

12 tans / day

$13,200 / mo

$158,400 / year

Booked solid. Bridal season. The ceiling on spray tan alone.

And then — the part most schools won't tell you

Those numbers are spray tan only. The real math is what happens when those same clients become your lash, brow, facial, and head spa clients — services with $85–$250 tickets and 4–6 week rebook cycles. One spray tan client, converted to a lash fill cadence, can be worth $1,500+ a year on her own.

That's why I teach spray tan first. It's the cheapest door to open — and the one that leads to every other room in the house.

How the day runs

What your training day looks like.

  • 1-on-1 with Larae. Just you and her. No cohort. No shared attention.
  • Location: Our 1920s home studio at 2851 1st Avenue N, Historic Kenwood / Grand Central, St. Petersburg.
  • Schedule: Full day, paced to your comprehension. Most students wrap in 6–8 hours; some go longer if we go deep on the business chapter.
  • Format: Manual walk-through → equipment setup demo → product line tour → solution-blending exercise → consultation script practice → hands-on technique time (gun in your hand, spray patterns, trigger control on a test surface) → Larae demonstrates a full spray on a live model (you watch + are encouraged to video-record her artistry) → you perform a full spray on 2 live models with Larae guiding you in real time.
  • We provide ALL the models. Typically 3–4 total: one for Larae's demo (you video-record) and 2–3 for your hands-on practice. You don't bring anyone.
  • What you bring: notepad, pen, paper, comfortable clothes you don't mind getting solution on.
  • What we provide: all equipment, all solutions for the training day, the models, your printed manual, and your printed Bronze Lily certificate of completion handed out on the day.
  • Our breakroom + kitchen is open to you. Bring snacks, drinks, lunch — make yourself at home between phases.

  • Emailed PDF copy of the manual with direct hyperlinks to every supplier, product, and equipment vendor we use

  • Additional model days at $100/hr in our studio when you want a refresher or want to practice a new technique under Larae's eye

Honest scope

What's not included — and why.

No kit. No formula. No products. Most beauty schools bundle a starter kit at $300–$800 over wholesale. We don't.

Instead, you leave training with a supplier list, direct hyperlinks, and a recommended first-order checklist. You buy your equipment and solutions directly from the manufacturers we use — at wholesale, no upcharge from us. Your $850 trains you. Your money goes to building your business, not padding our bundle.

Also not included: CEU hours (this is a Bronze Lily certificate of completion, not a continuing education credit), refund policy (no refunds offered), or licensing (none required for spray tan in Florida).

Prerequisites

Who can train.

No license required. Spray tanning is an unlicensed service in the state of Florida — meaning anyone over 18 can train, certify, and start practicing. This is the academy's only certification with no prerequisites.

Spray tan training is especially well-suited for:

  • Career changers entering beauty for the first time
  • Newly licensed estheticians or cosmetologists building a service menu
  • Salon owners adding spray tan as a new service line (group pricing available case-by-case)
  • Bridal stylists and hair professionals who want to offer a sunless tan as a wedding-package upsell
  • Mobile artists who want a low-overhead service to take to clients' homes and Airbnbs

Price + terms

Price + payment.

  • Custom payment plans available — text (727) 218-7045 to discuss what works for you
  • Group training for salon owners: case-by-case for staff cohorts. Call to discuss.
  • No bundle pricing on individual certifications — the price is the price for each skill.
  • Reschedule: must be requested at least one week before training day. Less notice forfeits a partial cost.
  • No refunds once training is booked.

Spray Tan Certification Questions

Frequently Asked.

Do I need a license to spray tan in Florida?

No. Spray tanning is an unlicensed service in the state of Florida. Anyone over 18 can train and start practicing. This is the academy's only certification with no licensure prerequisite.

How long does the spray tan training take?

One full day, paced to your comprehension. Most students wrap in 6–8 hours; some go longer if we spend extra time on the business chapter.

Is this a cohort or 1-on-1?

1-on-1. Just you and Larae. No shared attention, no cohort schedule.

What does the $850 include?

Full-day 1-on-1 training, your printed take-home manual, an emailed PDF with direct supplier hyperlinks, 3–4 live models, Bronze Lily certificate of completion handed out on the day, wholesale supplier list + first-order checklist, marketing material samples, consultation forms, and unlimited post-training Q&A. NOT included: kit, formula, products — students buy directly from suppliers at wholesale, no upcharge.

What equipment will I need to start spray tanning after I'm certified?

A professional airbrush gun, a mobile tent, an extraction device, a starter set of solutions, and barrier and finishing products. Total startup cost is typically under $1,000 if you order from our recommended suppliers. We give you the exact list on training day.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes. Payment is due in full before training day, but we offer custom payment plans to get you there. Text (727) 218-7045 to discuss.

Will I get a real Florida certification?

You'll receive a Bronze Lily certificate of completion. Florida does not issue a state-recognized "spray tan license" because the service is unlicensed. The Bronze Lily certificate is the industry-recognized credential issued by The Bronze Lily Training Academy.

How much does spray tan training cost at Bronze Lily?

Tuition is $850 for the full 1-on-1 day with Larae — printed manual, emailed supplier PDF, 3–4 live models, certificate, and unlimited post-training Q&A included. Equipment and starter solution are not included; students buy directly from our wholesale suppliers at cost (no upcharge). Total startup — tuition plus equipment plus first round of solution and supplies — lands right at or under $2,000.

How many spray tan students does Larae train per year?

It varies by season. Bridal months (spring and fall) can run 4–5 training days; quieter months may only have 1–2. Larae teaches between her own client book, which caps total seats at roughly 25–50 students per year. Bridal-season dates fill fastest — if you have a window in mind, text us early.

What sets Bronze Lily's spray tan certification apart from Sjolie, Norvell, or other national programs?

Three differences. First — 1-on-1 with the founder, not a cohort or virtual class. You train with Larae personally, not a sales rep or a video. Second — brand-agnostic supplier guidance. We don't sell solution, so we teach you to evaluate any line on its merits and buy at wholesale. Third — business architecture, not just technique. The course is built around spray tan as the front door to a multi-service beauty book (lashes, brows, facials, head spa), which is how Larae built hers.

Will I be ready to book my own clients right after training?

Yes. By the end of training day you'll have practiced on 3–4 live models, received your certificate, ordered (or queued) your equipment from our supplier list, and walked out with the printed manual and emailed PDF. Most students take their first paying client within 7–14 days of training.

What if I've never spray-tanned anyone before?

That's the assumption. The course is built for first-timers — no prior beauty experience required. We start with skin science and the history of DHA, walk through equipment and product, then move into the spray itself. By the time you reach the models, you've had every question answered. If you're already a licensed esthetician or cosmetologist, we'll move faster through the fundamentals.

Do you train out-of-state students?

Yes — and many of our students fly in. The Bronze Lily Training Academy is in Historic Kenwood, St. Petersburg FL — 25 minutes from Tampa International (TPA) and 15 from St. Pete-Clearwater (PIE). We can recommend short-stay hotels and AirBnBs walkable to the area. See our visiting St. Pete page for the full guide.

Is there post-training support after I'm certified?

Yes. Every certified student gets unlimited post-training text access to Larae for technique questions, troubleshooting, supplier issues, and business questions — for life. We also share marketing materials, consent forms, and client-intake templates on request.
